A peephole is a simple opening in the façade of a building through which daylight and air can enter. Peepholes were sometimes closed with a sliding, rectangular, wooden panel or a large stone. A peephole could also be covered with leather, translucent animal hide, or a textile.
Around 400 CE, peepholes became common in northern European façades.
