Around 1754, the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, redesigned the Russian Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. He developed a double window where the outer sash was open at the bottom, while the inner sash opened at the top. Fresh air could thus be drawn in, heated and ventilate the rooms. The design was known as the Russian Window.
