In 2001, Pilkington introduced the first range of self-cleaning glass products under the name Pilkington Activ.
Self-cleaning glass is a coated, nanotechnological invention conceived for the exterior windowpane. The coating itself is based in a thin titanium dioxide film. When activated by the sun's ultraviolet rays, it breaks down organic matter on the surface of the glass. The self-cleaning properties can be combined with other coated glasses with for example solar control and/or low-emissivity properties.
